“PALLIATIVE CARE” – A New word for many:

In simple language, “Palliative Care” means making patients and their relatives more comfortable. There are many ways to treat the disease but what happens when all experts fail? At that time palliative care comes in picture. Palliative care provides comfort to the patient and family both and eases their sufferings. It also supports them in relieving physical pain due to disease, as well as reduce emotional social spiritual suffering associated with this for patients and family members. At a glance, palliative is a comprehensive treatment that covers all aspects of human experience associated with advance illness such as cancer.

Palliative treatment for complications encountered in advance cancer:

  • Intolerable cancer pain
  • Cancer wound dressing
  • Feeding Tube insertion, Urinary Catheter insertion
  • Cough, difficulty breathing
  • Ascites – fluid in abdomen
  • Special bed for bed-ridden patients – due to severe weakness, paralysis
  • Severe oedema, obstinate constipation, vomiting, nausea, halitosis – bad breath, ptyalism, xerosis – dry mouth
  • Tracheostomy care, etc. nursing care
  • Maggots (live insects in ulcers/deep wounds)
  • Fistula (tracheo-oesophageal, vesico-vaginal, etc.)
  • Airbed
  • And other palliative care treatment.

Testimony of Harisinh Popatsinh Rathod’s experience of Karunalay – 05 / 07 / 2013 (translated from original Gujarati testimony)

He never received such good treatment in any other hospital even after spending so much money. Other hospitals charged Rs. 2000 to drain the fluid from the abdomen. Whereas 2½ liter fluid was drained totally free of cost in Karunalay along with all the other treatment given. Before coming here, he was given only liquids based on doctor’s advice as his food pipe was blocked.   But after coming to Karunalay, he could eat Khichadi, Kadhi, and Papad also. We wished to purchase Ramayan cassettes at home after we saw him seeing Ramayan in Karunalay. We had also recollected his childhood days after seeing him playing carom board in Karunalay. He was not willing to stay in other hospital whereas he has no desire to go home after being admitted in Karunalay. We have never seen such a hospital which feels just like Home.
